I still don't have time to blog anything more extensive... However, for a wee while I have been reflecting on my tendency to carp, criticise and rant, despite the fact that I am supposed to be a "good news" person. I still reserve the right, indeed see it as a responsibility to do so in the face of injustice, malpractice and plain stupidity! But without making a "new year's resolution out of it, I am going to make a genuine effort to do 2 things...
1) To get on with making a positive difference where I cann even when I am frustrated by organisations I am associated with, and others in positions of power and responsibility who (I believe) are not doing all that they might. But that is a principle and practice I have held to for most of my life and especially so over the past couple of years... The "new" thing for a "new" year is...
2) To regularly (and where possible daily) post a "good news" story in print or video, that is life affirming and inspirational (without being saccharine - I'm not going completely soft)... I will be doing this primarily on FB and particularly via the Belfast South FB page and group...
But I begin by posting this video here... It tells the story of video producer Casey Neistat and what he did with a promo budget for the Ben Stiller movie "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" (a film I have no desire to see)... He blew it, with the producers' permission, on helping folks in the Philippines after the recent typhoon Yolanda... Yes, it may be a cynical ploy on the part of producers to get a hearing with an audience who might right them off usually... and it probably isn't the immediately most effective way of addressing need in the Philippines, but if stimulates others to give then great... Perhaps, as some have suggested, if the advertising budgets for the upcoming Superbowl were diverted to disaster relief, we would see a big impact!
Anyway... here's the video... and look out for future good news stories via FB. And feel free to point me in the direction of some yourself...
Shalom
